Hooray! I’ve been listening to allot of Akala this year and I was pleasantly surprised when he got nominated for a MOBO. I sat down to watch the awards ceremony last night with the slim hope that he might win (He was up against big hitters like Busta Rhymes and Kanye West and UK talent like Kano and Sway). But against the odds he won and I cheered at the TV and waved my copy of his album around! He couldn’t keep the smile off his face when he was interviewed backstage. He’s on a totally independent record label called Illastate so it’s got to be a massive boost to get that kind of exposure.
