BAXTER DURY – Love In The Garden / Cocaine Man (7″ Single)

1965 Records OLIVE012: 4th December 2006
1. Love In The Garden
“Coughed up from the lungs of loneliness, came happiness, hope and smiles”
2. Cocaine Man
“We ware friendly smiles, all night, get blooded on Lucifer’s grain, pray it never stop”

At last, a new release from Baxter Dury (Son of the late great Ian) to follow up on 2005’s brilliant ‘Floorshow’ LP. I can’t quite explain how he manages to evoke the spirit of his father’s music while, sounding totally like his own man (It’s a trick that Jeff Buckley managed to pull off too).

‘Love In The Garden’ is a suitably brilliant comeback single, since it’s the best thing he’s recorded so far. It’s built around a propulsive but modest Guitar riff while Baxter half talks/half sings over the top in his distinctive voice. Conveniently for the uninitiated, this 7″ has his previous best song, ‘Cocaine Man’ on the other side. It was one of my ‘Top 100 Tracks Of 2005’ and ‘Love In The Garden’ is destined to be in my 2006 list.
