HOLY HAIL – Born Of A Star (12″ EP)

ACTH Recordings ACTH001: 2nd April 2007
1. Born Of A Star (Original / Shir Khan Remix / Bonde Do Role Remix)
“Touch not shattered, attacked on the matter, and the congregation hastened to keep me on the ladder”
2. I Owe
“My man thinks he’s so fine, spendin’ all my Liquor and drinkin’ my Dime”

‘Born Of A Star’ is an unstoppable Punk-Funk anthem from New York’s Holy Hail. Usually with this type of New York outfit, the rapping is almost ironically bad in an endearing Debbie Harry sort of way. But vocalist Cat spits out the kind of tongue-twisting rhymes that put Hip-Hop’s heroes to shame and has me constantly reaching for the rewind button. If you like CSS in any way or loved Chicks On Speed then this is for you.

Berlin’s Shir Khan puts in a crunching Peaches style cut-up mix that teases the listener with the vocals. DJ Gorky (From Brazil’s Bonde Do Role) kicks in some Diplo Drums and highlights the Kraftwerk elements of the song. The fourth track on the EP is a new one called ‘I Owe’. It comes off like the glorious results of Yeah Yeah Yeahs recording with The Wurzels in a New York basement (Mainly due to the “I owe, I owe” chorus sounding a bit like “Oooh arrh, oooh arrh”).

THE ACUTES – Set On You (CD Single)

Bad Sneakers Records BADSNEAK05CD: 2nd April 2007
1. Set On You
“Once again, I love the clothes you wear, once again, I love the time we spent”
2. Rumba
“I was a young Halle Berry, said the girl in the cap, to the bishop in the back of the bar”

‘Set On You’ came in at number twenty-two in my ‘Top 100 Tracks Of 2005’ and it’s finally getting an official release in 2007… better late than never! It’s such a simple and efficient tune seemingly built around the notion of: 1 – Lay down killer repetitive Guitar riff, 2 – Shout some bizarre lyrics about hanging your head in glue over the top… and that’s job done. It’s a joyous, playful, celebratory record that brightens my day every time I hear it. ‘Rumba’ is an emotional mini-epic with a detailed story at its heart, told in the style of Black Francis fronting The Smiths with hints of The Velvet Underground (And of course, Rumba Drums).
