MORRISSEY: Salford Lad (Radio Documentary)

“A sad fact widely known… the most impassionate song to a lonely soul is so easily outgrown, but don’t forget the songs that made you smile and the songs that made you cry, when you lay in awe on the bedroom floor”

Here is Stuart Maconie‘s brilliant two-part radio show about Morrissey for anyone that unfortunately missed it.  It’s got interesting contributions from other Mancs like Paul Morley and Damon Gough and skilfully weaves the interview subjects with relevant Morrissey lyrics.

JAMIE T – Sheila (Re-Issue CD & 2x 7″ Singles)

Virgin VSCDT1936 / VS1936 / VSX1936: 7th May 2007
1. Sheila
“Jack had a gang that he called ‘The Many Grams’, he was known as ‘Smack Jack the cracker man’, in life he was dealt some shit hands, but the boys got the back now”
2. Rawhide (Feat. Lily Allen)
“He screams to silence, dads got no money, and I don’t like violence, take what you want though”
3. Back To Mine For A Moonshine
“Lets go back to mine for a moonshine, make sure you’re quiet, my mum is downstairs, she’s been pissed since this mornin’ so she’s cert’ passed out, that’s why my dads is all asleep in armchair”
4. Meet Me On The Corner
“Tin foods, swing moods, face so pale, back scar, brawl bar, finger nails”

Unless you’ve been living under a rock you’ve already fell in love with ‘Sheila’ so this re-release seems a bit pointless. Especially when Jamie’s album is packed with many equally fantastic tracks. I’ve listened to ‘Sheila’ so many times I can sing along with every word including the John Betjeman sample “Good heavens you boys, blue blooded murder of the English tongue”. To make up for this re-release, Jamie’s pulled out the stops with three melancholy and addictive B-sides.

‘Rawhide’ is a bouncy Ska-Popper with the great Lily Allen singing a verse and backing vocals. ‘Back To Mine For A Moonshine’ is an oddly hypnotic mix of creeping Piano and pulsating Dub Bass with a killer Drum break at the end. ‘Meet Me On The Corner’ has got some of Jamie T’s best lyrics combined with eerie downbeat music.

MP3 OF THE WEEK: Grinderman – Honey Bee (Let’s Fly To Mars) (Live On Later) mp3

“Cancer, rabies, S.A.R.S, hairy beards and hurtling stars, won’t somebody touch me?”

I’m a huge fan of Nick Cave in tear-stained-angelic-ballad mode but less so in fiery-satanic-Rock mode.  So when I heard his new band had the title of “Grinderman” I was put off and I never bothered finding out if they were any good.  But tuning into Jools Holland the other night, I was blown away by the power, the fury and also the Bee impersonations of Grinderman.  ‘Honey Bee (Let’s Fly To Mars)’ tackles post-millennial paranoia with everything from Bird Flu and antisocial behaviour to terrorism.  So it’s basically the Daily Mail set to music but approximately seven billion times better than that sounds.  When their searing performance came to an abrupt and thrilling end the camera moved over to Travis clutching their Acoustic Guitars.  As you might imagine, they completely failed to “Upstage” Grinderman.

THE HOLD STEADY – Stuck Between Stations (CD & 7″ Singles)

Vagrant VRUK047CDS / VRUK047S: 7th May 2007
1. Stuck Between Stations
“He said I’ve surrounded myself with doctors and deep thinkers, but big heads with soft bodies make for lousy lovers”
2. Chips Ahoy! (Live At Fingerprints)
“She’s hard on the heart and she’s soft to the touch, migraine headaches when she does it too much, she always does it too much”
3. American Music
“You were born too soon and I was born too late, but every time I look at that ugly lake, it reminds me of me”
4. Teenage Liberation
“Nineteen was a 90 second short, about a cartoon kid who sits and drinks on his porch, and gets pissed, he took one good swipe at his wrist, but he missed, so he lived”

The music on ‘Stuck Between Stations’ is big gutsy American Rock in the Bruce Springsteen mould but the vocals are like the barely coherent rantings of an insane Elvis Costello. Parts from the lyric leap out of the speakers like “On the radio”, “Lousy lovers”, “He Died” and “Drowned in the Mississippi River”. From the massive Kick-Drum intro to the searing Guitar Solo and beautiful Piano it’s built to blow stadiums apart.

‘Chips Ahoy!’ was The Hold Steady’s last single and it’s a song about… well the band explain it in the intro to this brilliant live version. It’s like Talking Heads if they picked up an Accordion and decided to play Folk music. ‘American Music’ is a fairly faithful cover of a Violent Femmes song and it’s both addictive and quietly anthemic. ‘Teenage Liberation’ is back to the sound of ‘Stuck Between Stations’ with an added sprinkle of Glam-Rock Glitter.

MILK KAN – Here Ya Come Again & Again (7″ Single)

Blang MKAN01: 7th May 2007
1. Here Ya Come Again & Again
“The night is dark, he’ll keep it low key, the moon smirks, whilst the stars spit on me”
2. I Want My MTV To Want Me
“I hang out with all the CEOs and gliteratay, be at the after shows and private partays, but I’ve a Kentucky Fried Chicken bucket for a head, and not enough rumours about the girls that ‘ave been inside my bed”

Milk Kan’s last insanely brilliant single ‘Bling Bling Baby’ ruffed up Bob Dylan‘s ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues’ and updated it for the times we live in.  This time they’ve decided to sample/pervert Dolly Parton‘s 1977 song ‘Here You Come Again’.  Milk Kan have turned it into a love/hate ode to their dealer with a nod to The Velvet Underground‘s 1967 classic ‘I’m Waiting For The Man’.  The combination of Dolly’s catchy chorus and Milk Kan’s funny and poetic lyrics is totally irresistible.  ‘I Want My MTV To Want Me’ is an almost equally catchy Lo-Fi Pop-Punk thrasher with the second best lyric this year to mention Danny Glover (After ‘Thou Shalt Always Kill’ of course).

MP3 OF THE WEEK: Herman Dune – Song Of Samuel mp3

“My princess I can tell, from the beauty of this sound here, that with your instructor Samuel, that true love for you is found here”

I’ve been hooked on this B-side from Herman Dune’s new single for the last fortnight. It gets better and better with every listen. ‘Song Of Samuel’ is an intricately told story of the forbidden love between the daughter of a protective rich man and her lowly music teacher, but in the end her father’s heart is melted by the beautiful music the tutor has taught her. It usually takes a film director hours, or an author hundreds of pages, to pack in as much rich detail and beauty that Herman Dune manages in less than six minutes.

SAM ISAAC / LUKE LEIGHFIELD – Split (10″ EP)

Mannequin Republic MR003: 30th April 2007
1. Sam Isaac – Sticker, Star & Tape
“I went out to try and make a history of being brave, I knew I’d see her walk in hat, scarf and gloves”
2. Sam Isaac – I Miss Those Summers
“Is music everything, did we get it right, all I know is we’re having fun now, but the innocence is gone, my life is in my hands”
3. Luke Leighfield – The Rain Will Come Again
“I woke up this morning, saw another of those days of ambitions destroyed and hopes washed away, I woke up this morning and I prayed for rain, to brighten up monotony and help me live again”
4. Luke Leighfield – Annie Hall
“I’ve got clothes on my chair to watch me sleep, with the humming light of my red record machine”

This release is for anyone who loved Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly and Dave House‘s brilliant split EP from last year.  It’s similar in sound, theme and even format, because Sam covers a song by Luke and vice versa.

Sam Isaac’s voice reminds me of Kele Okereke and the music on ‘Sticker, Star & Tape’ also has a hint of Bloc Party thrills but it’s got a much warmer sound.  Sam’s cover of ‘I Miss Those Summers’ is a semi-acoustic gem with wonderful Cello moments.  Luke Leighfield’s ‘The Rain Will Come Again’ manages to be quietly intimate and unforgettably epic at the same time.  The crashing Drums, rich French Horns and piercing Violins add up to the kind of grandiose production that you’d usually only get from Jason Pierce.  Luke’s cover of ‘Annie Hall’ combines devastatingly beautiful Piano and massive echoey ‘Purple Rain’ style Drums to create something almost as big as Prince‘s 1984 anthem.

MANIC STREET PREACHERS – Your Love Alone Is Not Enough (2x CD & 7″ Singles)

Columbia 88697075602/88697075612/88697075602: 30th April 2007
1. Your Love Alone Is Not Enough (With Nina Persson)
“Trade all your heroes in for ghosts, in for ghosts, in for ghosts, they’re always the ones that love you most, love you most, love you most”
2. Boxes & Lists
“Boxes and lists, shifted under beds, twisted in my head, like a Nazi war film”
3. Love Letter To The Future
“It always seems to start like this, measuring our life in coffee stains, moving forward, stuck on trains, revisiting another day’s pain”
4. Welcome To The Dead Zone
“So welcome to the dead zone, it’s a circus full of whores, get your body bought and sold, blinded by the glitter and the gold”
5. Little Girl Lost
“Oh put the colour back in your eyes, and put the feeling back in your tired eyes, you’ve been avoiding the truth, but you’ll make your way back soon enough”
6. Fearless Punk Ballad
“At 21 I thought this song was over, at 29 my eyes closed tight and suffered, recurring dreams still unrelenting, the world turned west, we found redemption”

‘Your Love Alone Is Not Enough’ isn’t anything like as fiery as the last limited-edition single ‘Underdogs’ but it is very, very catchy. The repetition of the end of every line sticks right in your head “When times get tuff, oh they get tuff, they get tuff, they get tuff”. The Manics are aided by Nina Persson from The Cardigans on vocals, bringing to mind early single ‘Little Baby Nothing’ which featured Traci Lords. ‘Your Love Alone Is Not Enough’ finds the Manics at their Pop best and it really grew and grew on me. At first I was unsure, but after ten or more listens I was singing along with Nina at the end and playing air Drums with Sean.

The included B-sides give you both quality and quantity. ‘Boxes & Lists’ is a big rifftastic rocker in that great “James wishes he was Slash” way and ‘Love Letter To The Future’ sounds like a brilliant outtake from ‘Gold Against The Soul’. ‘Welcome To The Dead Zone’ and ‘Little Girl Lost’ are more like something from ‘Everything Must Go’. Last but not least is ‘Fearless Punk Ballad’, with James’ angelic vocal bringing to mind Rufus Wainwright and the music slowly building to anthemic proportions. It’s the best of the b-sides and probably better than the A-side too.

ARCTIC MONKEYS – Favourite Worst Nightmare (Japanese Bonus Tracks)

Domino WIGCD188J: April 2007
13. Da Frame 2R
“007 & Brucey Wayne are shitting their selves because there’s another name coming to claim what is his to claim, 10% faster with a sturdier frame”
14. Matador
“There’s blood on your chin where you’ve bitten your tongue, smitten but might not be smitten for long, if you’re still sitting she’ll soon be smitten and gone”

A rare Japanese copy of the Arctic Moneys’ new album just landed on my doorstep and I thought I’d share the two exclusive bonus tracks with fans in the rest of the world.  No doubt you’ve already bought the regular version and been relieved that it’s a worthy follow up to the Debut LP.  In my opinion, ‘Fluorescent Adolescent’ has got hit single written all over it.  Sadly the UK release didn’t come with printed lyrics but that’s been remedied for the Japanese CD, so it’s worth tracking down just for that reason (Check Ebay).
