THE PAPER CRANES – I’ll Love You Until My Veins Explode / Milkrun (7″ Single)

Longest Mile Records MILE02: 14th May 2007
1. I’ll Love You Until My Veins Explode
“Like St. Sebastian on a tree, I’ve got your arrows stuck in me, it hurts too much to pull them out, so I’ll cut holes into my coat”
2. Milkrun
“I see the parachutes, they billow in the fallow field, swell like blisters in the air”

‘I’ll Love You Until My Veins Explode’ is a stomping Piano based song with the singer invoking powerful images such as Christian Saints, Middle Eastern strife and Greek poetry to represent his emotional state. ‘Milkrun’ seems to be about a convalescing Pilot writing letters home and The Cure influences that were only hinted at on the A-side, really come to the fore. Both songs are absolutely huge and are crying out for a big time producer to bring out their full potential. Hopefully this first single is sufficiently enticing to get them some choice studio time.

ARCADE FIRE – Intervention (7″ Single)

Mercury 1732915: 21st May 2007
1. Intervention
“Been working for the church, while your life falls apart, been singing hallelujah with the fear in your heart, every spark of friendship and love will die without a home, hear the soldier groan, we’ll go at it alone”
2. Ocean Of Noise (Performed By Calexico)
“No way of knowing what any man will do, an ocean of violence between me and you”

I’ve had an incredible live recording of ‘Intervention’ since just after the release of Arcade Fire’s first album ‘Funeral’. It’s been a two-year wait to hear a studio version and it’s all that I hoped it would be. A swirling miasma of orchestral instruments rises from a melodramatic church Organ intro, like something out of The Phantom Of The Opera. The vocal weaves together subjects of war, death, life, religion and post-911 fear over a production every bit as epic, sprawling, terrifying and ultimately beautiful as the world we live in.

Sadly for the B-side we don’t get a brand new Arcade Fire song like there was on the last single. Instead there is a cover of album track ‘Ocean Of Noise’ by Calexico, which more than makes up for it. It starts with the sublimely beautiful plucking of a Harp, and then Drums and Trumpets build toward what sounds like a powerful memorial march performed for the state funeral of some grand South-American dictator.

Here are links for some notable videos on YouTube: ‘Intervention (Live On KCRW)’, ‘Intervention (Cut with Battleship Potemkin)’, ‘Intervention (Cut with Rumble Fish)’, ‘Intervention (Fan video 1)’, ‘Intervention (Fan video 2)’ and most bizarrely… ‘Intervention (Cut with a catwalk show)’.

PASE ROCK – Sexy MF / Lindsay Lohan’s Revenge (12″ EP)

Fully Fitted FF001: 21st May 2007
1. Sexy MF (Dirty As Fuck / Clean As The Board Of Health / DJ Eli Bangin’ Ass Remix / Instrumentally Retarded / Sexy Muthapella)
“I don’t know if you can take it, I don’t care if you fake it, Purple Rain butt-naked go jump in the lake shit”
2. Lindsay Lohan’s Revenge (Main Dirty / Instrumenstrual / Babyratapella)
“Boogie down Melrose, L.A. froze, same day hell froze, average Joes, got a lota hell noes, except for the club, it never snows, huh?”

Either of these songs could be number-1-hits if they weren’t so damn filthy that if any Radio Station actually played them, there would be questions in the House (Not to mention getting sued by Lindsay Lohan’s management). But of course, like his compadres from Spank Rock and Plastic Little, Pase Rock is on a mission to offend and amuse, as you could guess by just reading what he’s called the different versions of the tracks.

‘Sexy MF’ shares the same title as the Prince classic and even references a scene from Purple Rain. It features an incredible tongue-twisting duet between Amanda Blank and Pase Rock. ‘Lindsay Lohan’s Revenge’ is about an infamous paparazzi photo of actress Lindsay Lohan that’s doing the rounds on the net. Pase Rock is joined by Santogold, Spank Rock & Holiday Thug all chucking in their 2 Cents about the Hollywood party-girl. Rave beats, robotic backing vocals and a sidesplitting finish all add up to an irresistible production.

MP3 OF THE WEEK: CSS – Let’s Make Love (Streetlife DJs’ Rappinhood Remix) mp3

“Come back, I’ll warm you up, make me breakfast, I’ll make it up, you are so talented, I’m in love, let’s make love and listen to death from above”

CSS’ all-conquering ‘Let’s Make Love & Listen To Death From Above’ single has been given the mash-up treatment by the London duo Streetlife DJs. They’ve skilfully mixed CSS with the Tom Tom Club classic ‘Wordy Rappinghood’ (Chicks On Speed did a fantastic cover a couple of years back). This is a blend so seamless you’ll hardly believe the two tracks were made a quarter of a century apart. The “M-m-m-m-m-m-m-make love” bits at the end will get drilled deep down in your brain and right now… I can barely remember what the original sounded like.
