MP3 OF THE WEEK: Lupe Fiasco – Superstar (Feat. Matthew Santos) mp3

“So just take me home, where the mood is mellow, and the roses are thrown, M&Ms are yellow, and the light bulbs around my mirror don’t flicker, everybody gets a nice autograph picture, one for you, and one for your sister, who had to work tonight, but is an avid listener”

Lupe Fiasco’s ‘Food & Liquor’ was not only my favourite album of 2006 but easily the best album in at least a decade and a contender for the greatest Rap album of all-time.  It’s an LP that means so much to me and is so full of detail and depth (Which I’m still exploring) that it’s difficult to convey how much I love it.  Every time I listen, I spot something new that gives me goose-bumps because it’s sharp, witty, intelligent or profound.

So ‘Superstar’ is from his follow up album ‘The Cool’.  On the surface it’s about celebrity but then you delve a little deeper and find lines about capitol punishment, self doubt and self belief.  There’s a soulful chorus provided by Matthew Santos who collaborated on Lupe’s first album.  It’s not his finest track (That’d have to be ‘Hurt Me Soul’) but it’s certainly better than most of the music released this year.

  1. I found your site after doing a google search for the dynamics’ cover of seven nation army (which I heard on kcrw for the first time today — awesome!).

Out of curiosity, I thought I’d check out what else you have, and by gum, it’s my favorite hip hopper! You’re making it in the del.icio.us list. 🙂

  2. Seriously, Lupe should be mentioned in the same breath as Shakespeare:

“We came through the storm, nooses on our necks and a smallpox blanket to keep us warm, on a 747 on the pentagon lawn, wake up the alarm clock is connected to a bomb, anthrax lab on a west Virginia farm, shorty ain’t learned to walk already heavily armed, civilians and little children is especially harmed, camouflaged Torahs, Bibles and glorious Qur’ans, the books that take you to heaven and let you meet the Lord there, have become mis-interpreted reasons for warfare, re-read ’em with blind eyes I guarantee you there’s more there, rich must be blind because they didn’t see the poor there, need to open up a park, just close 10 schools we don’t need ’em, can you please call the fire department, they’re down here marching for freedom, burn down their TV’s, turn their TV’s on to teach ’em”

Is that an essay on the political environment of the 21st century by a world-renowned philosopher? Nah, it’s just one of Lupe’s lyrics.

He’s an utter genius, plain and simple.
